Southview graduate Jazzminn Richey-Obey finished fifth overall with 1,189 total pins in six games and the Hampton University bowling team competed in its first tournament of 2011 on Saturday and Sunday, finishing third in the Frederick E. Underwood Lady Bulldogs Classic hosted by Bowie State University.

Richey-Obey averaged 198.0 pins per match. She topped 200 pins three times, including a 230 in the Lady Pirates’ bye.

She also bowled a 219 against Howard and a 203 against Coppin State. On Sunday, the Lady Pirates beat St. Peter’s 4.5-2.5, before falling 2-4 to Morgan State. Hampton closed out Baker match play with a 4-1 win over Saint Peter’s.

The Lady Pirates went a combined 5-3 on the weekend, going 3-2 on Saturday’s 5-person team match action before going 2-1 in Sunday’s Baker match play.

On Saturday, Hampton lost 852-892 to Howard, before recording 1,005 points in a bye. The Lady Pirates then defeated St. Peter’s 898-876 before falling 880-881 to North Carolina A&T. Hampton closed out Saturday’s action by beating Salem International 768-631 and Coppin State 698-630.

Southview graduate Jazzminn Richey-Obey is part of the Hampton University bowling team that was recently recognized by the NCAA.

The bowling Lady Pirates were recipients of the NCAA Public Recognition Award.

The honor is bestowed on those teams that have a Division I Academic Progress Rate in the Top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

Richey-Obey bowled on Southview’s first bowling team and bowled all four years of high school. She averaged a 178 her senior season. She is also a three-time Pepsi-Cola Scholar Athlete. She helped the Saints qualify for the state tournament in 2007, placed second in the County and third at Districts.

North Ridgeville's Collin Oliva and Elyria Catholic's Jonathon Mahilo have decided to continue their bowling careers at Wright State University.

Oliva led North Ridgeville to back-to-back state appearances. The Rangers took sixth in the state in 2009 and took seventh in 2010. He also led the North Shore Bowling Conference in average the past two seasons.

The Lady Pirates went 2-3 during team match play, losing the first two to Adelphi University (847-873) and Delaware State (798-909); however, they won the next two against North Carolina A&T (851-801) and Howard (874-828). Hampton came up short against St. Peter’s 878-888.

Richey-Obey led the way with a total pinfall of 950, bowling a season-high 235 against Howard.

Southview's Jazzminn Richey-Obey, who is a sophomore bowler at Hampton University, was one of the athletes chosen by the college to represent its new website (http://www.hamptonpirates.com/).

Richey-Obey, who also made the dean's list, and the Hampton University women’s bowling team won five matches this past weekend at the Golden Bear Invitational, hosted by Kutztown University on Saturday and Sunday.

The Lady Pirates went 2-4 in team play on Saturday. The team defeated Delaware State and Coppin State, but lost to Florida A&M, Valparaiso, Stephen F. Austin and SUNY-IT.

The Lady Pirates (45-55) will return to action next Saturday and Sunday, when they travel to Dover, Del. to compete in the Capital City Classic hosted by Delaware State University.

Richey-Obey bowled for Southview's first-ever bowling teams and in her senior year, she received a scholarship for Hampton University. She was a three-time Pepsi-Cola Scholar and helped the Saints qualify for the state tournament in 2007 after placing third at districts.

Vermilion’s DJ Pohorence has decided to play dual sports at Notre Dame College of Ohio next season.

Pohorence signed to golf and bowl at the NAIA college in South Euclid, Ohio.

On the alleys for Vermilion, Pohorence led the Sailors to the state championship four straight seasons and were runner-up in 2007. They also won the North Shore Conference the last two years.

On the golf course, Pohorence earned three varsity letters. He was Vermilion’s team captain this season and also won the team’s Scholarship Award for having the highest GPA on the team.
