Winning a game for the first time at the College World Series isn’t supposed to easy.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

Just ask Kent State.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

The Golden Flashes survived shaky relief pitching to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning and beat Florida 5-4 on Monday. The loss eliminated the top-seeded Gators, who made it to the finals a year ago.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

“It wasn’t the prettiest thing in the end,” Kent State coach Scott Stricklin said. “It was gut-wrenching no matter who you were rooting for. Even if you weren’t rooting for anybody, that was tough to watch. But we found a way. That’s what this team has done all year long, and we’re still here.”

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

The Flashes (47-19) bounced back from an 8-1 loss to Arkansas to post what Stricklin called the biggest win in program history.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

“We belong here,” he said. “That’s the most important thing that we wanted as a team, as a program and as a university was to make a statement that we belong here. We’re not a fluke. We’re a really good baseball team.”

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

Kent State scored four unearned runs and another on a wild pitch, then held on as Florida chipped away at the lead with a run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

The Gators loaded the bases with one out in the ninth against Michael Clark and Josh Pierce, an Avon graduate.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

Pierce fought back from a 3-0 count to strike out Casey Turgeon when Turgeon couldn’t check his swing and got called out on an appeal to the third-base umpire. Justin Shafer flew out to right to end the game, with Pierce pumping his right fist once the ball landed in right fielder T.J. Sutton’s glove.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

“It’s an unfortunate way to end the season, but I think Kent State deserves a lot of credit for the way they played today,” Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “They hung in there, got a big strikeout at the end, and our guys hung in there right to the last out. So we have nothing to be ashamed of.”

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Arkansas’ DJ Baxendale bounced back from one of his worst starts of the year to turn in his best.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

The junior right-hander held Kent State hitless into the fifth inning and combined with Brandon Moore on a four-hitter Saturday in the Razorbacks’ 8-1 victory that spoiled the Golden Flashes’ first appearance in the College World Series.
Baxendale’s performance was a lot different than his previous outing, when he was hit for five runs in four innings in an 8-1 loss to Baylor in the super regionals.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

“Against Baylor, I really felt like I let the team down,” Baxendale said. “To come out here at this stage and be able to get us a victory in Game 1, it was huge for not only my confidence but I think for the team’s as well. We know any time you can win the first game, it just keeps building off that.”

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

Baxendale and Moore got some unexpected help from the bottom of the lineup. No. 9 batter Jake Wise homered for the first time since February and also hit a two-run single. No. 8 batter Matt Vinson hit a two-run double that gave Arkansas (45-20) a 5-1 lead in the sixth.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

“My 3 and 4 holers didn’t get a hit today and we scored eight runs. Somebody got it going,” Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said. “That’s a good sign.”

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

Kent State (46-19), the first team from the Mid-American Conference to make it to the CWS since Eastern Michigan in 1976, couldn’t get much going against Baxendale.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

Baxendale didn’t allow a hit until Sawyer Polen’s infield single with two out in the fifth. He held the Flashes scoreless until Jimmy Rider homered in the sixth.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

“DJ Baxendale was outstanding,” Kent State coach Scott Stricklin said. “He kept us off balance. His fastball was sharp and he throws the breaking ball when he’s behind in the count. He really competes.”

Kent State became the first team to advance from the Mid-American Conference to the NCAA Regional Championship and a berth in the national tournament’s round of 16 known as the Super Regionals.

Ranked No. 25 in the nation according to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the Golden Flashes (44-17) ran their nation-long winning streak to 20 games – including seven in the post-season – courtesy of the victory over Kentucky (45-18). The 2012 MAC Regular Season and Tournament champions, Kent State has won 35 of its last 42 games – including 24 of 26. The Flashes won a wire-to-wire regular season title and followed it up by going a perfect 4-0 in the MAC Tournament to clinch their fourth straight conference tournament crown.

Kent State, the regional’s No. 3 seed, advanced to its second straight NCAA Regional Winner’s Bracket Final by outlasting Kentucky, 7-6, in 21 innings in the regional opener Friday (June 1) – the second-longest game in the history of the NCAA Tournament – then knocked off the regional host and top seed, No. 16 Purdue, 7-3, Saturday (June 2).

The Golden Flashes now will travel to Eugene, Ore., to square off with No. 10 Oregon next weekend (June 8-11) in a best-of-three-games NCAA Super Regional series at PK Park.

Steve Walkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12619697514438059308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7771002827082497425.post-10202717024857715002012-05-26T19:40:00.000-04:002012-06-05T16:42:44.893-04:00Hoty advances to NCAA Outdoor Championships

Perkins graduate Matt Hoty was among seven athletes from Tennessee to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Hoty followed his indoor qualification in the men’s shot put with a trip to nationals outdoors. The first-year performer, though, made it by the slimmest of margins, punching out a throw of 59-10 1/2 on his first attempt that withstood the next five rounds of throws from his competitors. We wound up with the 12th and final qualifying spot.

“The first throw, I came out and said `I’m going to give it what I’ve got,’ and I hung on from there,” Hoty said. “I don’t think I’ve ever thrown my best throw with my first attempt, so it was kind of nerve-racking holding on the entire time.”

Hoty earned second team All-American honors in the event during the indoor season.
Perkins graduate Amy Schlessman, a Kenyon College junior, represented
the Ladies tennis team at the NCAA Division III individual
championship. Schlessman was one of 32 players from throughout the
country selected to participate in the singles tournament, and she
advanced to the Sweet 16 before being knocked out.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Playing at Cary Tennis Park, Schlessman handled Amy Friesenhahn
from the University of Texas-Tyler in the opening round. Schlessman
breezed through the first set, 6-0, and won the second set by a solid,
6-2, margin.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
The win sent Schlessman on to the round of 16, where she squared off
against Emory University's Gabrielle Clark, the No. 1-ranked player in
the Atlantic South region. Schlessman tried to keep pace but ultimately
fell by a 6-1, 6-1 final.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
For Schlessman, it was her first appearance in the national singles
bracket. She became the first Lady to win a match in the championship,
and therefore qualify for All-America status, since Ashley Kriwinsky in
2006. She had a berth in the doubles championship under her belt, which
came with Prita Kidder during the 2010 season, and also resulted in an
All-America nod.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Midview's Eric Lauer has verbally committed to accept a baseball scholarship to the University of Kentucky, a NCAA Division I school in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

<span style="color: black; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">“I picked Kentucky because it is
close to home and because they are members of the SEC, one of the best baseball
conferences in the country,” Lauer said through a press release. “I liked everything about
it, including the fact it is a strong academic school. It is a weight off
my shoulders.”

<span style="color: black; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Lauer, who is 5-1 on the season,
has struck out 93 batters in 44 1/3 innings pitched. The

overall with 161 career strikeouts.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“Eric has worked incredibly hard to get to this point and is
very deserving of such an honor,” Midview Head Baseball Coach John
Justice said. “He has been a major part of our team’s success since his
freshman season, including this year’s conference championship. I know
that I am extremely proud of Eric and so are the rest of his coaches, teammates
and his family. I look forward to seeing Eric in Middie Blue in 2013 and
Wildcat Blue in 2014.”
Kentucky, who is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation (as high as #1 during

Hoty, a redshirt freshman, broke his week-old UT freshman indoor record in the men’s shot put. He did so by stretching the tape to 60-0 1/4 to finish second at the Auburn Invitational behind defending SEC Outdoor champion Stephen Saenz of Auburn.
After making a victorious college debut last weekend at the Kentucky Invitational and snapping Chip Kell’s 1968 Vol rookie record of 58-7 by a half inch, Hoty improved his ranking this week from 12th to ninth on UT’s all-time performers list in that event.
