Catalano named athlete of the week

By STEVE WALKER

KENNESAW, Ga. - Amherst’s Gianni Catalano was named the Atlantic Sun Track and Field Athlete of the Week, running for Kennesaw State University in Georgia.

Catalano, a mid-distance runner, received the award after placing first in the 800 meter run (1:53.89) at the Spring Break Open at the University of North Florida. He was also part of the 4 x 800 relay team's first-place finish at the Georgia Relays last weekend. Catalano ran the anchor leg of that race to help the team record a time of 7:39.54.

This is the second year in a row he has earned those honors. Last year he received it after taking first place in the 800 at the Clemson Orange and Gold Classic.

Catalano, who is currently the reigning Indoor and Outdoor 800 Champion with the fastest time in the conference, was also named athlete of the week twice during Indoor season.

Catalano and the Owls were supposed to compete in the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech last weekend, but it was officially cancelled due to severe weather. Their next meet is Friday, April 10-11 - the Seminole Twilight, hosted by Florida State in Tallahassee, Florida.
