Beach pitches well, but falls to Rock

Vermilion’s Adam Beach pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings, but host Slippery Rock University rallied for four runs with two outs in the eighth for a 4-3 victory on Sunday at Jack Critchfield Park.

Beach (4-2) held the Rock scoreless on six hits through the first seven innings, and looked to be on the verge of getting through the eighth unscathed. But with one on and two outs, Mitchell Monas and Adam Jury had back-to-back singles to score a run and Messer followed with a shot over the right-field fence to erase the Storm’s lead.

Beach, who allowed just six hits in the first seven innings, gave up four runs on 11 hits. He walked two and struck out five.

Beach is currently 4-3 in 12 appearances, which include nine starts. He also has a save.

Amherst’s Ryan Rua had two hits for the Storm. Rua is currently second on the team with a .400 batting average. He has started in 44 games and leads the team in home runs with 11 and RBIs with 40.

Admiral King’s Matt Toth is also doing well for the Storm. Toth is hitting .344 in 45 starts. He has two home runs and 31 RBIs.
